The AI Acceleration: Are We Even Ready for What’s Coming?


Generative AI is rapidly compressing the structure of creative industries. As production becomes easier, the real constraint in creative work shifts elsewhere: judgment. The question is no longer whether something can be made, but whether it should be. In this new landscape, the value of human creativity may lie less in producing content and more in deciding what is worth creating at all.

As a full-time professional focused on content, what does this mean for me? More importantly, what does this mean for the people who have spent years, sometimes entire careers, honing skills that now sit inside a changed landscape?

Creative industries have been organised around a layered production model. Strategy and conceptual thinking sat at the top, but most of the labour and jobs were concentrated in execution. Designers produced visuals, editors refined footage, writers drafted campaigns and photographers captured images.


The Compression of Creation

As someone working in marketing and storytelling, I feel this acceleration personally. Not long ago, a typical day in my role meant sitting with a brief for a while before anything visual or conceptual began to take shape, because the work depended on assembling the right people, aligning on a direction together, and then moving through several rounds of drafting, feedback and revision before anything was ready to show a client or a senior stakeholder. A campaign route that required two weeks of back-and-forth between writers, designers and strategists now has a rough visual direction ready before the first team meeting has even been scheduled. That compression of time has changed something more than just the pace of the work.

Today, the conversation in team meetings has changed in ways I did not anticipate. We no longer spend time debating whether a concept is feasible to produce; we debate whether it is worth producing at all, because the production itself is no longer the constraint. I have watched colleagues who spent years building expertise in their craft sit in reviews and evaluate AI-generated work that mimics that same craft in minutes, and the reactions are rarely simple. Some find the speed genuinely liberating, a way to test more ideas within the same time window. Others are quieter about it, and I understand why, because there is something disorienting about watching a tool approximate in seconds what took years to learn to do well. 

The cost dimension has also shifted the dynamics of client conversations in ways that are harder to navigate. When a polished AI mockup exists before a designer has opened a single tool, the negotiation about the value of the human process becomes much more difficult to justify. The pressure to move faster, produce more, and continuously prove the worth of my judgment in assessing AI-generated content is one I feel personally, and more often than I expected.

Technological disruption in creative work is not new. Desktop publishing reshaped graphic design. Digital photography replaced film. Social media transformed marketing. In each case, technology reduced the cost of production while increasing the volume of content produced.

Generative AI, however, affects a different layer of the creative process. Instead of merely accelerating production, it automates substantial parts of it. And for those of us whose working lives are built around that process, this is not an abstract observation.


Prompting vs Briefing: A New Cognitive Skill

Recently, I have caught myself thinking things I never imagined I would. There was a moment, not long ago, when I was working on a brief for a brand repositioning campaign, and I opened an AI tool before I opened a notebook, almost instinctively, and what struck me was not the quality of the output, though it was impressively coherent, but how different the experience felt from briefing a human colleague. With a person, there is friction in the best sense of the word. They push back, misunderstand in ways that turn out to be productive, bring associations you did not anticipate, and return something that occasionally surprises you. With AI, the process is faster and more obedient, and that obedience is both its strength and its clearest limitation.

Most of the possibilities generated by AI are mediocre. Systems trained on vast datasets tend to reproduce patterns that already exist in the market. The outputs are often polished, coherent, technically competent, but also predictable. They reflect the statistical centre of past work rather than the strategic edge of future differentiation. In other words, AI is very good at producing what already looks like a campaign. It is less capable of determining what should be a campaign.

Prompting well, I have come to realise, requires a fundamentally different kind of thinking than briefing well, because it demands precision and front-loaded specificity in a way that human collaboration does not. The difference becomes obvious the moment you test it. If I ask AI for a campaign idea for a skincare brand, it will produce something usable, polished, and entirely safe. It is the kind of output that sounds intelligent but could belong to any brand in any market in any part of the world. If instead I ask it to develop a campaign route for a premium skincare brand targeting urban women aged 28 to 35 who are price-sensitive but aspiration-driven, where the brand wants to shift from product-led messaging to identity-led positioning and the emotional tension to explore is the one that sits between self-care and career ambition, the output changes significantly, not because the tool became smarter, but because I asked a more insightful question. That question only exists because I understand positioning, audience psychology, behavioural triggers and competitive differentiation well enough to know what to ask for.


Is Creativity Safe?

For years, I believed creativity was our moat. Strategy, storytelling and conceptual thinking felt safe because they seemed to resist systematisation in a way that execution never quite did. I held that belief with more confidence than I now think was warranted. The underlying assumption was that while technology could automate the rendering of an idea, it could not automate the having of it. The strategic leap, the cultural read, the instinct for what a brand needed to say at a particular moment, were irreducibly human capacities.

What I did not anticipate was how this shift would change not just how we produce creative work, but what we think creative work is supposed to do. I still remember a different rhythm of ideation from the early days of my career. It started with a brief, spending real time searching for references, drawing inspiration from unexpected places, talking through half-formed ideas with colleagues before anything crystallised into a direction. That process was slower, but it produced something that felt authorial. Now, in too many rooms I sit in, the process begins with a prompt and ends with whatever the tool returns, and originality has quietly become a casualty of the speed.


The Social Media Economy

It is worth being honest about where this started, though, because it did not start with AI. Social media, performance marketing and the relentless pressure to stay relevant had already pushed creative teams toward reactive, trend-led content long before generative tools arrived. AI has accelerated that shift, but it did not cause it. What it has done is make the cycle faster and more vicious. As a brand manager, I am now expected to be across every emerging trend, to know what is moving on social media this week, and to execute against it before the moment passes, because in this environment, it is not about being first anymore; it is about never falling behind.

The ads I grew up admiring did not operate this way. Surf Excel’s Daag Acche Hain built a philosophy around the idea that getting dirty is a sign of living fully, and it stuck because it stood for something that transcended any single campaign moment. Fevicol made a brand out of the simple, human idea of things that hold together, and did it through years of writing that was witty, warm and unmistakably its own. Hamara Bajaj did not sell a motorcycle; it sold a vision of a self-reliant, optimistic India that people felt genuinely proud to be part of. These campaigns are remembered because they were true, and the creative teams behind them were given the time, the trust and the mandate to build something that meant something. That kind of brand building has become rare, and I do not think AI is the reason. But I do think AI makes it easier to avoid it.


Managing Managers

There is one more dimension to this that I think deserves to be named plainly, because it plays out in real workplaces every day and rarely makes it into the broader conversation about AI and creativity. Senior management, understandably excited by what they have seen AI produce, sometimes arrives at expectations that reflect genuine enthusiasm but an incomplete understanding of what production actually involves. I have sat in meetings where a request for a creative video has been accompanied by a 2-hour turnaround expectation, because the assumption is that AI handles it, so the process is effectively instant. What that assumption misses is that AI can generate raw material, but the judgment, craft and contextual sensitivity required to turn that material into something that actually represents a brand, communicates a message with clarity and lands with an audience, still takes time, and still requires the kind of human involvement that cannot be prompted into existence.

What this moment asks of us, I think, is not speed and not resistance, but depth. Every technological shift in the creative industries has ultimately rewarded the people who understood what the technology could not do and invested in those capacities rather than competing with the ones it could.

The photographers who thrived after digital were not the ones who mourned film, but the ones who recognised that the eye, the instinct and the understanding of light were still theirs alone. The writers who remained indispensable after content platforms scaled were not the fastest producers but the ones with something to say that an algorithm could not derive from a dataset. The pattern holds here. As execution becomes something that can be generated, the question of what is worth executing becomes more important, and that question cannot be answered by a tool.

It requires judgment shaped by experience, values developed over time, and the kind of cultural and human understanding that only comes from having lived and worked in the world attentively. AI is already here, and it will keep improving. What we choose to develop alongside it and whether we choose to develop anything at all is still entirely ours to decide.
